A Japanese-language Steam review (238.7 hours played, recommended)

Reviewers describe a sandbox where physics rules apply to every object. They note that players can spawn NPCs, attach wheels to furniture, and build functional vehicles. The workshop provides endless weapons and maps that keep the experience fresh.

Amount of content and replayability follows at 18.1 percent of positive reviews. Writers point out that the game lacks a fixed campaign but compensates with user-generated modes. They mention playing hide-and-seek, zombie survival, and role-playing servers. The median playtime confirms that owners invest heavily into the title.

Performance and optimization appear in 2.7 percent of recommending reviews. Players note that the Source engine runs smoothly on modest hardware. Some mention that adding too many addons can cause frame drops or crashes. They advise checking compatibility before subscribing to large files.

Online play and multiplayer are discussed in 2.9 percent of positive reviews. Writers enjoy joining public servers to test addons with strangers. They note that matchmaking requires downloading skins and maps, which can lengthen load times. The community remains active enough to find servers for almost any game mode.

Price and value for money are mentioned in 2.6 percent of recommending reviews. Owners appreciate the frequent discounts and the low base cost. They consider the title a safe purchase even without owning other Valve games.

Topics raised in negative reviews

Players who do not recommend the game focus heavily on gameplay and core mechanics. This topic appears in 23.6 percent of negative reviews. Writers explain that the game requires significant knowledge to reach a playable state. They find it difficult to understand how to combine game modes with specific maps. The learning curve is steep for newcomers who want to host multiplayer sessions.

Performance and optimization issues are mentioned in 11.1 percent of non-recommending reviews. Owners report that spawning too many props immediately strains their hardware. They note that the game lacks modern rendering features like ray tracing. Some mention that texture errors occur when missing source games are used.

Amount of content and replayability appears in 8.3 percent of negative reviews. Writers feel that the sandbox feels empty without external addons. They want a structured campaign to guide them through the mechanics. The absence of a built-in tutorial leaves them unsure where to start.

Online play and multiplayer are discussed in 5.6 percent of negative reviews. Owners note that joining servers often requires downloading large files. They complain that mismatched addons between players cause long loading screens. The experience is described as unfriendly for players who do not enjoy troubleshooting.

Playtime and reviewer profiles

The median playtime behind these reviews is 42.5 hours. Owners who recommend the game frequently discuss gameplay and core mechanics. They mention this topic in 33.9 percent of their positive reviews. Players who do not recommend it also discuss gameplay, but at a higher rate of 23.6 percent. The gap shows that struggling with the mechanics leads to a lower score.

Reviewers who praise the title focus on content and replayability. This topic appears in 18.1 percent of positive reviews. Owners who dislike the game mention it in only 8.3 percent of their negative reviews. The difference indicates that negative reviewers care more about technical hiccups than content volume.

Performance and optimization separate the two groups more clearly. This topic appears in 2.7 percent of positive reviews and 11.1 percent of negative reviews. Players who experience crashes or frame drops are far more likely to withhold a recommendation. The data confirms that technical stability directly influences the final score.

Methodology and sources

Data

Steam user reviews, retrieved with Steam's public review listing between 2010-11-20 and 2026-10-07: 1,729 written in Japanese. Steam's own all-time totals for Garry's Mod were read on 2026-10-12.

How the reviews were classified

Every review was read by a language model, which rated how positive it is, how much concrete detail it gives, and which of 15 fixed topics it talks about. The counts and percentages in this article were then computed from those labels in ordinary code, not by the model. Automatic classification makes mistakes, so single percentages should be read as approximate. Reviews of fewer than 15 characters were not sent to the model; they count as positive or negative from the reviewer's own recommendation and carry no topic.

Limits

People who write a Steam review in Japanese are not a representative sample of everyone who plays in Japan, and the language of a review does not establish where its author lives. Steam's default filter for off-topic review activity was left on, so periods Steam marked as review bombing are excluded from the counts in this article. Reviews that arrived after the retrieval date are not included.
