Interface and performance stand out against other games

Against the other 103 followed games, Japanese-language reviews raise interface, controls, key bindings, and controller support far more often than usual. They appear in 18.0% of the 150 classified Japanese-language reviews, while the baseline is 4.0%. That is 4.5 times the usual rate and 14.0 percentage points higher. Reviewers describe a missing WASD option, click-to-move and click-to-attack sharing one input, and controller support that many say they need to play comfortably. Some recommending reviews still praise build variety and jump-based combat, but call the keyboard and mouse setup awkward.

Performance, optimization, bugs, and crashes are also above the usual level. They appear in 45.3% of classified Japanese-language reviews, compared with a 13.7% baseline. That is 3.3 times as often and 31.6 percentage points higher. Reviews mention crashes, freezes, failed sign-in or account connection, artifacts that stop working, and progression bugs. A recommending review says a crash stopped after closing an external application.

Amount of content, length, and replayability appear in 33.3% of classified Japanese-language reviews, above the 25.6% baseline by 7.7 percentage points, or 1.3 times as often. Reviewers say the story can be finished quickly and that post-clear content feels thin. Others say farming, artifact swaps, and equipment testing keep them playing. No topic in the Japanese-language reviews falls far below the usual rate.

Short content and controls dominate negative reviews

The data lists no divisive topics for these Japanese-language reviews. The clearest pattern is in the reviews that do not recommend the game. Interface, controls, key bindings, and controller support appear in 17.6% of those 91 negative reviews. That is 2.7 times the 6.6% baseline for negative reviews across the other followed games, and 11.0 percentage points higher. The same complaints about click movement and missing key bindings also show up in the recommending reviews, where the topic appears in 18.6% of them.

Amount of content, length, and replayability appear in 38.5% of negative Japanese-language reviews, compared with 25.4% of recommending reviews. Against the typical negative-review baseline of 22.7%, that is 1.7 times as often and 15.8 percentage points higher. Negative reviews describe limited endgame goals, low item stack limits, and little reason to keep farming after clearing the story.

The moment I cleared it, my thought was, 'Huh? That's it?'

Methodology and sources

Data

Steam user reviews, retrieved with Steam's public review listing between 2026-09-29 and 2026-10-27: 150 written in Japanese and 2,763 written in English. Steam's own all-time totals for Minecraft Dungeons II were read on 2026-10-28.

How the reviews were classified

Every review was read by a language model, which rated how positive it is, how much concrete detail it gives, and which of 15 fixed topics it talks about. The counts and percentages in this article were then computed from those labels in ordinary code, not by the model. Automatic classification makes mistakes, so single percentages should be read as approximate. Reviews of fewer than 15 characters were not sent to the model; they count as positive or negative from the reviewer's own recommendation and carry no topic.

Limits

People who write a Steam review in Japanese are not a representative sample of everyone who plays in Japan, and the language of a review does not establish where its author lives. Steam's default filter for off-topic review activity was left on, so periods Steam marked as review bombing are excluded from the counts in this article. Reviews that arrived after the retrieval date are not included.
