Performance falls below the typical baseline

Difficulty drives negative feedback and splits opinions

Difficulty drives the complaints. Twenty-two point five percent of the reviews that do not recommend the game discuss difficulty or balance. That rate is one-point-five times the typical baseline of fifteen point five percent. Reviewers describe the combat as exhausting and note that the game feels more like a chore than a thrill. They mention that enemy hardness increases on higher settings. Some find the stamina management and item placement tedious. Performance splits opinions sharply. Four point nine percent of recommending reviews mention bugs or crashes, compared to twenty-three point nine percent of negative reviews. The nineteen-point gap shows that technical issues strongly discourage recommendations. Reviewers note that crashes often happen after long play sessions. Performance, optimization, bugs, and crashes appear in six point eight percent of the classified reviews.

Recommendation rates shift with play time

Sessions under sixteen hours show an eighty-eight point three percent recommendation rate. Players in this group focus heavily on core mechanics, combat, and content length. Reviewers with over fifty-eight hours recommend at a ninety-one point five percent rate. Their discussions shift toward gameplay and replayability, with story appearing more frequently. The three-point-two percent difference carries a p-value of 0.169. Long-session players appreciate the expanded weapon roster and stealth mechanics. They note that the story receives deeper development compared to shorter playthroughs. Both groups agree that gameplay remains the central focus. The recommendation gap remains statistically modest across the playtime spectrum. Players who invest more time consistently report higher satisfaction. The least played quarter discusses gameplay in forty-two point seven percent of their reviews. The most played quarter discusses gameplay in fifty-six point seven percent of their reviews.

Methodology and sources

Data

Steam user reviews, retrieved with Steam's public review listing between 2023-03-24 and 2026-11-06: 1,405 written in Japanese. Steam's own all-time totals for Resident Evil 4 were read on 2026-11-07.

How the reviews were classified

Every review was read by a language model, which rated how positive it is, how much concrete detail it gives, and which of 15 fixed topics it talks about. The counts and percentages in this article were then computed from those labels in ordinary code, not by the model. Automatic classification makes mistakes, so single percentages should be read as approximate. Reviews of fewer than 15 characters were not sent to the model; they count as positive or negative from the reviewer's own recommendation and carry no topic.

Limits

People who write a Steam review in Japanese are not a representative sample of everyone who plays in Japan, and the language of a review does not establish where its author lives. Steam's default filter for off-topic review activity was left on, so periods Steam marked as review bombing are excluded from the counts in this article. Reviews that arrived after the retrieval date are not included.
